Overview

My name is Austin McCoy, and I'm a 15 year-old 9th grader from Rochester, Minnesota.

I like doing things that most teenagers enjoy -- playing sports, video games, etc.   But I also love combining everything I know in science, math, engineering, and technology to help people in the world.

My latest work is a robotic thermocycler, a year-long project that started in my kitchen and took me all the way to the Oval Office to meet President Obama!  I won the  First Place Technology Award for my thermocycler at the Broadcom MASTERS National Science Fair.

My Blog from New Delhi, India:

Follow me  January 1-15, 2014 as I take my thermocycler to New Delhi, India to begin my Mayo Clinic Internship.  I will work with local teachers and researchers, learn how they teach science and discuss my experiences in the United States.  I hope to describe my thermocycler and how science can be broken down and learned in an exploratory way-- in much the same way that I developed my thermocycler for a science fair.  I will be sharing this with teachers and researchers as they share their experiences with me.

If all goes well, I also hope to find a way to put my thermocycler to work in the future, rapidly and inexpensively detecting diseases like Dengue Fever, to help stop outbreaks.   Could my thermocycler be used in shipping container clinics around New Delhi?   Did I design it in a way that researchers can use it?   Can a science fair project be turned into a lifesaving device?  Follow the story, as I find out!

Background:

Learn why I developed a thermocycler,  how it's used in a fast genetic test called RT-PCR for rapidly detecting Dengue Fever, and why rapid detection of Dengue Fever is a key part of stopping it's spread.   New Delhi is one of many areas of the world hard-hit by Dengue fever.
